New Month, Same Greitens Problems

Grand Jury Looking Into Governor Eric Greitens

Despite originally saying, through lawyers of course, Greitens had not been contacted by any law enforcement, news came out yesterday that a St. Louis Grand Jury has subpoenaed the now ex-husband of the woman Greitens was engaged in an extra-marital affair with and allegedly blackmailed. It is very possible the woman herself will be called in to testify as may Greitens himself to discover if enough evidence exists to hold a trial. You may recall this is the SECOND court case facing Greitens, who campaigned on ending Jefferson City corruption and strengthening ethical standards; the use of the Confide mobile app may be a violation of the state's Sunshine open records law.  In both cases, no public funds are being used for his legal defense. However, the firm representing him in regards to the blackmail investigation is performing the work pro bono according to Greiten's spokesman.  This news was met with a startled reaction across the Missouri political community. The same Governor who rails against "career politicians and political insiders" seems to be trading services and access with a high profile law firm.  Questions have already been asked if the services, which would range likely in the low four-figures per hour for anyone not named Eric Greitens, will be taxable.  We probably won't find that out anyway since Greitens follows the lead of President Trump when it comes to releasing tax records.

We will all wait and see what happens next, but regardless of the outcome, the man who pledged to clean up Jefferson City has done more to disgrace the state's highest office in just one year than we could have possibly imagined.

Filing Period for State and County Offices In Three Weeks

Are you wanting to run for office? 2018 is going to be a good year for Democrats!  The following positions are on the ballot this year in Jackson County: all State Representatives, State Senate in the 8th District, US Senate, State Auditor, County Executive, all County Legislators, all County Committeemen and Committeewomen plus local and municipal elections. The filing period opens for these races on February 27th. If you would like to learn more about how to run for office, email the Missouri Democrats at run@missouridems.org or geoff@jacksoncodems.org and we'll get you up to speed.

Big Plans Require Help from Everyone

Jackson County will play a major role in the future of Missouri politics in 2018 and beyond. We have several competitive State House and Senate districts in play this year, voter turnout for Senator Claire McCaskill and Auditor Nicole Galloway will be critical in our area, and we stand to be an example of a pending wave of Democrats reclaiming state-wide offices in 2020. To get there, our staff and committee members have developed bold plans and aggressive campaign strategies, but we need the funds to do it. Please consider making a recurring contribution to the Jackson County Democratic Committee HERE. Our money stays in the area and is always spent wisely with minimal overhead. Every bit counts!

Notes on Upcoming Events

1) Keep an eye out for events featuring our candidates in our "most likely to flip" areas, such as Lee's Summit and Blue Springs. Tonight is the kick-off event for Keri Ingle, a House candidate for the 35th District.

2) The event for Rep. DaRon McGee at Boulevard Brewery featuring Mayor Sly James has been postponed.

3) Mark your calendars for the 31st annual Truman Gala: June 9th at Arrowhead Stadium. As always, we will be targeting nationally recognized names as a keynote speaker. Senator McCaskill, Auditor Galloway and other top Democrats will be there, so you should too!
